Still in California!
Aug. 27th, 2005 07:55 pmActually reading for BA a little! But the more interesting moments (when not being figuratively assaulted by the Berkeley crazies--and I don't mean the ones who wander into the coffee shops to read the papers) come when listening to Daniel on the phone with his parents. Specifically, his father. Specifically, this conversation, which I remember as follows:
"Hi, Dad.
[Miscellaneous stuff separating the beginning of the conversation from this part]
. . .
So, how's Alex [his brother]?
. . .
What?!?!
. . .
KNIFED?!?!
. . .
As in, put a knife in?
. . .
Stabbed.
. . .
Uh huh.
. . .
Uh huh
. . .
DMITRY?!"
And so on and so on. As it turns out, Daniel's father dropped the shoe as follows: "Alex was knifed by a Harvard boy!" Dmitry, Alex's good friend, a math genius, going to Harvard next year, and who was in Daniel's AP Calculus class when he (Dmitry) was thirteen, was the culprit. And, fortunately for Alex, but unfortunately for the juice of the story, the stabbing in question was merely a mishap with some Spanish heirloom, resulting in nothing more than a trip to the emergency room, which Alex tried to hide from his parents until they started yelling at him about how he should have taken out the trash.
I finished The Brothers Karamazov a few days ago. I thought about starting Crime and Punishment next, but Daniel said I don't want to read those consecutively.
