So when I went to Devon street with [livejournal.com profile] behind_the_wall Friday, we spent a fair amount of time looking at all the pretty Indian fabrics and outfits displayed in  the windows, and I was struck by how well the bizarre combinations of colors worked. Purple and yellow, for example, or turquoise and orange. And on the way back we talked about art; specifically, Rothko, and how [livejournal.com profile] behind_the_wall was less than impressed at his work, even though some people have reputedly looked at the paintings and burst into tears. So naturally, I googled him when I got back, and while I didn't burst into tears, I was more impressed than I expected to be at a bunch of colorful rectangles. I think part of it had to do with how the colors worked together, in the same way that the fabrics on Devon street did. I would never have thought to put black and dark grey and grey together on a navy background, and I would shudder at combining so many different versions of orange and red and pink, but then I'm not Rothko, and I'm not Indian.

And as my generative grammar becomes larger and larger, and more and more rules are necessary, and my assignment becomes less and less elegant and economical, I grow to hate everything Somali.

I want Daniel.

Interesting connection between the Devon Street outfits and Rothko. I'm still not a huge fan, but I do think you've nailed part of the appeal of his work. Did you remember to look up John Currin, too?

After that brief discussion of linguistics, I thought the cut was going to relate to that. But no, it turns out that it was cute! You'll get to see him fairly soon, right?

I did look up Currin. I was not tremendously impressed, although I could see what you liked about him. It just didn't really overpower the total weirdness of the basketball breasts, and the fact that he can paint didn't prove to me that he can paint pretty things, which is really what I care about.

Fairly soon. April 22, at 10:30 pm!
