You might not all know Margaretta. Therefore, a picture is below the cut so you can see her in full makeup and costume from "Pirates of Penzance" last year.

Margaretta!

Anyway. This lady plays the esteemed role of Citizen #1 in our production of "The Yeomen of the Guard," and her entire speaking role consists in trying to kiss Jack Point. A big, sloppy, theatrical smooch right on the kisser. The first time she succeeds. The second time he sees it coming and manages to hold her off. We, the other citizens, spend much of this timing squawking and trying to get in on the action, but she keeps it all to herself. It's a fun scene, and we staged it today. Since our Jack Point was not with us, the director, Jamie (picture below: he said he would be avuncular in a dirty uncle kind of way), had to stand in for him.

Jamie

Of course, in order to get the scene right, we did it multiple times. And the last time through he decided he wasn't going to resist Jack Point-style, and smooched Margaretta right back, Jamie-style. I think he even did the dip-her-back kind of thing. But then, he's a theater person. I think Margaretta is just friendly. Certainly there is more evidence to that effect: on the way home she suddenly stopped and said to a passer-by, "Marvin! How's it going?" Amy and I, who were walking with her, talked briefly about how Marvin was kind of a funny name, and about the various Marvins we know. This Marvin meanwhile turned and said, "Oh, hi, it's going well," and he and Margaretta chatted amiably for a few minutes, with Margaretta telling him about our show and saying he should come see it. Amy and I then jumped in and assured Marvin that the show would be good. "Margaretta made out with the director!" we said.

Then Margaretta asked him how tournaments were going. Marvin was confused. "Tournaments? What tournaments?" "Fencing tournaments!" "I don't fence." "But Marvin--" "My name's not Marvin." At that point I figured out what was going on. Margaretta thought that this Marvin was, in fact, the other Marvin that I already know. The Marvin I know is pictured below.

Marvin

This Marvin-who-wasn't Marvin looked nothing like the fellow above: he was a good four inches taller and forty pounds heavier at least, not to mention having a different face and voice and so on. In fact, the only thing that could possibly have made one think that he was our Marvin (pictured above) was that he responded to Margaretta calling him Marvin and chatted amiably with us. Why he did that, we have no idea. Maybe he thought he should know us from somewhere and was trying to cover, even if covering meant hearing all about this strange girl's amorous exploits with theater people. Or maybe he was just friendly. But we can still draw the conclusion that Margaretta is a dope. A friendly dope, of course, and we love her for it. Someone has to kiss the director, after all.
